September 2026 Posts in celebration of Labor Day
In celebration of Labor Day we are going to spend September talking about work. Why devote a month to work? Because you will spend 90,000 hours, a third of your life, at your job, so it is a good idea to make the best of it.
My father always said, “I never worked a day in my life.” Even though I could see with my own eyes that he was a workaholic. “I love my work so it doesn’t feel like work,” he followed up. This was his mantra and claim to fame — work didn’t feel like work because he loved what he did. So, how did work get such a bad reputation?
Gallup’s most recent research found that only 20% of employees worldwide are engaged at work, the lowest number in years and the second consecutive year of decline. Four out of five people are showing up without being truly present. And yet the same research found that employees with a strong sense of purpose are 5.6 times more likely to be engaged. People want to find purpose in their work; we all want to love what we do, so what is getting in our way?
That is what we will talk about this September. Not how to tolerate work, but how to find your purpose and love what you do. 90,000 hours spent doing something that matters to you is a completely different life than 90,000 hours spent waiting for Friday.
